Hello CSA Members,
It has been a great week. Full of ups and downs, sun and rain. It is summer and the farm is humming
along.
I want to say a special thank you to all the crew whom came
out and worked on this holiday week, especially those whom worked on
Friday. We are so blessed to have
a loyal and positive group of employees.
It has been a great season so far. The crops are looking lush and the fields are maintained so
far.
On Thursday we harvested the garlic. It was a really hot day. It always seems to be a hot day when we
harvest garlic. We lost quite a
bit of garlic due to the freezing in the winter but the bulbs that made it seem
to be large and beautiful. The
garlic is in the barn to dry for a few weeks so it will be nicely cured and
ready for eating.
The tomatoes are coming along well. We did not get to plant in the hoop
house as early as I would have liked.
I was so nervous about the very cold weather in April. But the plants are loaded with fruit
and with the warm weather I think we will be seeing ripe fruits soon
enough.
If you are ever in the area feel free to walk around and see
the gardens. I am usually running
around like crazy and don’t have much time to talk but feel free to take your
own tour!
We will post the weekly email on our blog: http://bhorganics.blogspot.com/
Don’t forget to pick up your box. It may help to set an alarm on your phone. At the West Reading site we have a
family that comes at 9 pm to clean up the porch. I had to do this so that I can get some sleep. I am crazy and I would worry about
those boxes all night. Sorry.

High Energy:
As a farmer, foodie and vegetable lover I am always
interested in the “energetics” of food.
Essentially this means when a vegetable is at its “peak.” If you are stuck in your ways but want
to try something new I highly recommend choosing something new from this
list. Here are the foods at their
highest energy level this week:
·
Salad Mix

·
Arugula

Recipes:
Peas
It has been a great year for our snow peas this year! The sugar snap peas had many problems
with germination. We planted them
3 times and still had very few plants.
We planted 3 varieties of snow peas as a trial this year and have finally
settled on 2. The purple peas are
fabulous and were a huge hit at the market. You may have received the smaller sized snow pea in your
box. These are a favorite for
eating from our staff. But what a
pain to pick them. This will be
the last week for peas. We will
have a lot so feel free to order extras and put them in your freezer!

This is amazing I never knew you could freeze
peas and beans without blanching! http://www.anoregoncottage.com/how-to-freeze-snap-peas-without-blanching/
